To go along with what Kaitlin is saying, also check the heel drop in his shoes. We should all be in shoes that are pretty flat from heel to forefoot. Say no to flip flops as well. I know with my 9 year old, he complained of some mild heel/ankle pain about 6 months ago. I switched him to a lower heeled shoe and he quit talking about it. Its funny when he wears the old ones to go play in the woods he will complain about how high the heel feels.

    Dustin,

Travis from MWOD Staff here. Do not discount the use of rack pulls. It is ok to bring the height of the bar up and work him through his available ranges until he has the motor control and mobility to start on the floor. Just keep adjusting the height down and increase the weight as he shows he is able to maintain control and position.
With police officers, hip flexion is always an issue due to the incredible amount of sitting they have to do along with the body armor and loaded belt. Look back through episodes about banded distraction and hip flexion/high hamstring. If it is important to him, he needs to cultivate time improving these positions every day.

Travis from MWOD staff here. To continue off what Phil suggested, using a softer grippy ball across the heel and up and down the sides of the shin and calf to relieve any tension in the soft tissues should be helpful. Think about getting some balls from Jill Miller at Yoga Tune Up, they are very good for the feet. I would also pay attention to your foot position while you drive. I like to tell people if you walk with your feet straight ahead, you should try to drive with your foot straight over the pedal as well. We all tend to adopt the duck foot position when we drive. See if this helps next time you have to travel a lot.

    Ken,

Travis from MWOD Staff here. I have used the bands with good success post surgery on patients and myself (elbow surgery late last year). When working on myself, I started pretty much as soon as I was allowed to start moving the elbow. With patients I have waited until they are cleared for activity. I like to err on the side of caution when dealing with other people’s joints! If anyone has started earlier with patients, please chime in. I have found it to be very beneficial in releasing underlying fascial restrictions and restoring full joint motion.
