WHO IS THE READY STATE FOR?

The Ready State is for adult athletes of all levels and ages — from professionals to weekend warriors.

The Ready State helps athletes who understand the importance of recovery, pain-relief, and self-care — especially as they get older. And who recognize that improving their range-of-motion and mechanics is critical for performing better (without getting hurt).

We give this group of athletes the tools to perform basic maintenance on themselves.

This type of self-directed maintenance is critical for everyday athletes in particular. Since these athletes don’t have a team of trainers to take care of them like most pro athletes do. It’s up to them to take care of themselves — and our goal is to help them every step of the way.

“So much information that can directly translate and be incorporated into my training schedule.”

– Chris Briffett

WHY CHOOSE
THE READY STATE?

Because it’s the only place to get teaching, lessons, and coaching from Dr. Kelly Starrett, DPT.

Although he’s probably too humble to admit it, Kelly Starrett is the #1 expert on the planet when it comes to the intersection of mobility, movement, and human performance. No one else can match his track record.

In fact, Kelly is the reason we even use the term “mobility” at all in the world of sports. Before he came along, mobility was a medical term used to evaluate senior citizens who could no longer get around on their own.

But by using his clinical background as a physio, Kelly took physical-therapy concepts and used them to create the “self-care for pain relief and athletic performance” category we all know as mobility today. And on top of that, Kelly invented many of the popular mobility techniques that have become commonplace in gyms, PT clinics, and homes around the world.

PUT YOUR TRUST IN THE READY STATE

Now more than 1.3 Million people of all ages & activity levels put their trust in The Ready State.

And we have users ranging from Olympic gold medalists to seniors who want to stay active as they age.

That’s because our programs offer simple, easy-to-follow movement and mobility sequences. Many of which you can do right from the comfort of home. And in as little as 10 minutes a day, you can eliminate chronic pain, expand your range-of-motion, and increase your athletic output.

OUR MISSION

At The Ready State, our mission is to help you Live Ready. And we have three founding principles:

1. It’s impossible to reach your full potential if you’re in pain, stiff, or tight. Yes, maintaining your body helps you play sports and exercise better. But your physical health also impacts your daily mental and emotional health. So getting in The Ready State can also help you be a better leader, employee, executive, or entrepreneur.

2. Our work with elite athletes serves as the proving grounds for our methods. Most people don’t play professional sports. But if our methods help athletes at the highest levels, then they can work for anyone.

3. Every human being should be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves. And with the right approach, people can resolve many of their aches and pains on their own — even if they’ve lingered for a long time.

Dr. Kelly Starrett

Co-Founder, Head Coach and Physical Therapist, Chief Tinkerer, Movement Optimist

Kelly is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and is the co-author of the New York Times bestsellers Becoming a Supple Leopard, Ready to Run and Built to Move and the Wall Street Journal bestseller Deskbound. Kelly is also the co-founder and CEO of TheReadyState.com and co-founder of San Francisco CrossFit, the 21st CrossFit affiliate. Kelly consults with athletes and coaches from the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB, the US Olympic Team and CrossFit. He works with elite Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard forces, and consults with corporations on employee health and well-being. Dr. Starrett’s work is not limited to coaches and athletes; his methods apply equally well to children, desk jockeys, and anyone dealing with injury and chronic pain. He believes that every human being should know how to move and be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves. Oh yeah, and he’s quite possibly the #1 fan of Sci-Fi film series, Dune.

Juliet Starrett, J.D.

Co-Founder, CEO

Juliet Starrett is an entrepreneur, attorney, author, and podcaster. She is the former co-founder and CEO of San Francisco CrossFit, one of the first 50 CrossFit affiliates. Juliet is the co-author of the Wall Street Journal Bestseller, Deskbound and co-host of The Ready State Podcast. Before turning her attention to The Ready State and San Francisco CrossFit full-time, Juliet was a professional whitewater paddler, winning 3 World Championship and 5 national titles. She also had a successful career as an attorney, practicing complex commercial litigation at Reed Smith for nearly eight years.

Dave Beatie

Chief Technology Officer

Dave is a veteran web designer and developer, and the perfect person to run our operations here at The Ready State. Beyond his professional expertise, Dave is a life-long “gym rat” obsessed with all things ferrous and heavy.

He actually found out about The Ready State when he needed help resolving lingering knee pain. But most importantly, Dave has a near-legendary archive of movie quotes that we find indispensable. (Plus he knows all of our passwords, so we can’t get rid of him.)

Margaret Garvey

Director of Education

Before coming to The Ready State, Margaret spent a decade in Hollywood. She worked in the Home Video department for Paramount Pictures, and in her spare time competed in local triathlons. After moving to the Bay Area, her dedication to fitness (and a lucky meeting with Juliet) brought her into the CrossFit world. Margaret was immediately hooked by the camaraderie and constant support the athletes offer one another. And she came to embrace all aspects of the sport — the pain cave, nutrition, mobility, Olympic weightlifting, and not so much the gymnastics.

Margaret brings the same dedication to her work for The Ready State, making sure all our virtual and in-person trainings are the best they can possibly be. When she is not at the box, “Mags” enjoys hanging with her two kids Luca and Tessa. She also likes to spend time cooking, reading, and volunteering at school events for her kids.

Lisa Schwartz

Director of Production

Lisa “Lux” Schwartz is a natural athlete — excelling at cornhole and other hobby sports with little to no practice. She also has a deep affinity for sauna and ice bath sessions, and loves to workout with Juliet and Margaret. (But only once a week — because rhabdo). Lux is passionate about getting us to frame shots that don’t include vacuums, debris, and cords…mostly to no avail. But we do appreciate her effort. Lux also likes to lift a weight periodically and flex her tiny muscles at parties.

Lux is the unofficial head of sustainability at The Ready State, too. She holds a BS in environmental biology from UC Davis and previously led studies about mercury contamination in California. Shaming people for single-use plastics is one of her favorite pastimes. Lux currently lives in the TL with her husband Zach, her kids, Wren and Fox, and their dog, Party.

Diane Fu

Coach

Diane Fu is the head coach at The Ready State. Diane has been a working coach since 1998 and enjoys being in the field actively working with athletes to help them improve and thread together fitness and function.

Diane first came on scene working with Kelly at San Francisco CrossFit in 2008. Through CrossFit, she discovered Olympic-style weightlifting and decided to dive down the rabbit hole of this sport. She started FuBarbell with the mission of making weightlifting accessible to the public and to synergize all the information that was being presented at the time using the question, “Is there one best technique that is superior to all techniques? If so, what is it and why?”

In exploring possible answers to that question, Diane has had to opportunity to work with Olympic level athletes and coaches from all over the world and has spent extensive time in China understanding their systems of training from youth to senior level athletes.

Diane enjoys spending time with her daughter Alex and is a student of life. Believing in approaching life with a beginner’s mind and an open heart, she spends her time reading, working out and reminding herself to enjoy the journey over the destination.

Dr. Sean McBride

Coach

Dr. Sean McBride received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from UCSF / SFSU in 2014. He is also a board-specialized Orthopedic Clinical Specialist after completing his Orthopedic Physical Therapy residency with Kaiser Permanente Southern California.

Sean’s formal training gives him unmatched expertise in anatomy, biomechanics, and clinical reasoning. While studying for his doctorate, Sean began working with Kelly at San Francisco CrossFit. Helping clients side-by-side with Kelly enabled Sean to refine his thinking about movement, mobility, and position even further. Now Sean brings his own innovative ideas and perspective to The Ready State on a daily basis. When he’s not on the clock, Sean continues to pursue his own evolution as an athlete and CrossFitter.

Dr. Travis Jewett

Coach

Dr. Travis Jewett received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic. Travis has also been competing in powerlifting since he was 14. That means he has over two decades of experience under the bar. And during that time, he has held state and national records for his weight and age.

Travis began to follow Kelly Starrett from the very first episode of MobilityWOD. Kelly’s approach to solving common orthopedic dysfunction resonated with Travis. And he immediately started to experiment with the ideas on his own patient base in northern Iowa. By using basic strength training and manual soft tissue and joint manipulation, he was able to improve the health and performance of his patients. Travis began to tell Kelly about his results and thought process. And after trading texts and emails for several years, Travis officially joined The Ready State team.

Dr. Kingsley Yew

Coach

Kingsley is the founder of Evolve to Perform Physiotherapy on Long Island, NY.
As an undersized “husky” kid who loved to play sports, Kingsley was always obsessed with improving athleticism and fitness. Movement was always in his DNA. However, his passion for sports led to chronic, overuse injuries that often sidelined him as a youngster.
It also filled him with a strong desire to want to help others avoid and prevent these situations and excel.
Kingsley believes that overall wellness – being fit and pain-free, is attainable, no matter what age you are. He has the unwavering optimism that we all can do something today to create a better version of ourselves.
Kingsley earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 2008. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Hofstra University – where he completed his Athletic Training clinical requirements with Division I Level football, wrestling, lacrosse, softball and field hockey and then went on to serve as an ATC for several prominent Long Island high schools.

Whether he’s working with an athlete, treating sports-related injuries or the everyday individual who wants to optimize the quality of their life, Kingsley has this goal in mind: promote and influence the body’s natural ability to heal, re-learn and be savage.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family. He has been married to his wife, Christina – who is a Physicians Assistant and Integrative Medicine practitioner, since 2005. Together, they have 3 children – Isabella, Kingsley II and Sophia. He also enjoys Crossfit, running and anything Star Wars related.

Dr. Dianna DiToro

Coach

Dr. Dianna DiToro received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of St. Augustine. She also holds two master’s degrees. One in exercise science and health promotion from California University of Pennsylvania. The other in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University.

Dianna’s CrossFit certifications include: Level 1 Trainer, Olympic Lifting, Endurance, and Mobility. She attended Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength Seminar, and holds the United States of America Weightlifting (USAW) Level 1 Sports Performance Coach certification as well as the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). She also has specialty training and experience in the rehabilitation of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction for both men and women.

Dianna began her athletic career as a swimmer and competed at the NCAA Division I level in college. After college, she received a commission in the United States Marine Corps and began what would be 6.5 years on active service. She first discovered CrossFit while on active duty. But without much coaching or guidance, it didn’t catch on for her at the time.

After the birth of her son, Dianna was re-introduced to CrossFit by a fellow military spouse. She was warmly welcomed, well-coached, and was hooked! CrossFit delivered the kind of challenge and camaraderie that she felt previously from collegiate athletics and as a Marine officer. She also personally experienced the life-changing sense of support and compassion from the CrossFit community when her active duty husband passed away in a mid-air collision during a military training flight on February 22, 2012. In addition to her family, friends, and military family, her CrossFit family were some of the very first responders to aid and sustain her and her son, Andrew, through an incredibly difficult time.

Dianna now has a passion for combining her military background and physical therapy training to help wounded warriors and other adaptive athletes, as well as beginners.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When you’re ready to face any challenge that comes your way — from sunrise to sunset — you’re in The Ready State.

As a company, The Ready State began by helping athletes improve their mobility and range of motion. At the time we called ourselves Mobility|WOD — short for Mobility Workout of the Day. But our goal was always to help you be ready…

…Ready for your next race. Ready for your next workout. Ready to run around with your kids.

Ready for anything life throws your way.

Being able to move without pain or restriction is essential for being in The Ready State. But it’s only one piece of the puzzle. And we wanted to have a more complete discussion of other key topics — like sleep, downregulation, nutrition, and more. That’s why, in 2019, we evolved from Mobility|WOD to become The Ready State.

Helping people with their mobility is still at the heart of what we do. And you can get daily personalized mobility drills with our Virtual Mobility Coach membership. But we also have a podcast and blog that take a wider look at what it takes to get — and stay — in The Ready State. We have big plans for the future to help everyone from athletes to executives be ready to excel on a daily basis. Be the first to hear about our newest projects by signing up for our email list.

We define “mobility” based on two components. First, you should be able to put your body into any pose or shape that is normal for a human being. In other words, you should have access to the full range of motion for the human body. But having access is not enough. The second aspect of mobility is that you need to actually be able to achieve those positions in real life. In other words, you need to have to motor control skills to actualize your complete range of motion.

To be blunt, stretching is not an effective way to restore your body’s range of motion. When you follow traditional stretching practices, all you do is passively pull on your tissues. But it turns out there is a lot more to restoring full range of motion than that.

First, stretching doesn’t get your brain involved. And remember, even if your body has full range of motion, you don’t have true “mobility” until your brain develops the motor control to actually express that range of motion. Also, unlike mobilizing, stretching does not look at your body as a system. It neglects key factors like your joints and sliding surfaces.

Mobility takes a systems approach to restoring your range of motion. It accounts for all the varied ways your body can lose its natural ability to move. Mobilizing restores your joints, sliding surfaces, soft tissue, and even blood flow. Plus it helps you develop the motor control you need to express that range of motion in your daily life.

You will need at miniumum a lacrosse ball and a foam roller. Most users find much greater benefit, though, from having a few more tools at their disposal. We’d recommend one of our kits from our store. Check out our gear page here!

The bottom line is that — like almost every sport or activity — working on your mobility requires equipment to be most effective. Yes, there are some mobilizations that do not require gear. (You can get seven of Kelly’s favorites in our free Hunchback to Human eBook.) But the vast majority of mobilizations — well over 95% — require that you to have at least a few basic items. So visit our gear list to see what you need, what’s optional, and where you can get everything.

The Ready State Virtual Mobility Coach gives you personalized daily mobility drills. You can adjust your daily programming based on how your body is feeling and your exercise schedule. Then, like a real coach, our system gives you a customized mobility routine for that day, drawing on our library of hundreds of videos.

The mobility drills in the TRS Virtual Mobility Coach fall into three main categories:

First, if you are in pain, resolving it should be your top priority. That’s why the first option in the TRS Virtual Mobility Coach says “I’m in pain.” If you select it, you’ll see a diagram of the human body, and you can click on exactly where you’re hurting. From there, you will get a mobility prescription to help fix your pain. And we’ll also help you understand the mechanisms behind your pain, so you can resolve it sooner and better.

Second, if you’re not in pain, you can tailor your mobilizations to prepare for (or recover from) a workout or sport. You start by selecting the option that says “I’m exercising” and tell us whether you want a pre- or post-workout mobilization. Then you select your activity from a list of more than four dozen sports, lifts, and other movements. From there, the TRS Virtual Mobility Coach will give you a custom mobilization for the exercise you have coming up or just completed.

Last, if you aren’t in pain, and you don’t have to prepare for or recover from exercising, you can use our daily maintenance option. You’ll be able to watch a featured mobility video of the day — similar to our current daily follow-along videos. But you’ll also be able to choose from a library of videos that are 10, 20, and 30 minutes long, depending on how much time you want to spend mobilizing. And you will be able to sort the videos by the areas of they body they target, too.

The concept of a “Supple Leopard” started when one of Kelly’s Navy SEAL friends made this passing comment. “You know, Kelly, A leopard never stretches,” he said. And for some reason, this idea stuck in Kelly’s mind — probably because it’s true…

A leopard can attack and defend at full physical capacity in the blink of an eye. You don’t see a leopard activating it’s glutes, or foam rolling, or warming up. It’s just ready.

Obviously, humans and leopards are on different physical playing fields. We have to warm up before strenuous activity to increase our core temperature. And we have to learn how to move correctly to avoid injury.

But we can still work toward the goal of having our full physical capacity available to us at a moments notice. And we can develop the range of motion and motor control to perform any physical feat at any time…

In other words, we can work toward Becoming A Supple Leopard
