Thanks for the answers.  I was actually just looking for that daily episode to encourage a friend who thinks there is no hope for her feet.

    Travis,

I did consider gout.  However, there is no redness, swelling, heat, or tenderness at the toe.  The pain is specifically related to the position of the toe and ankle or to pressure in a very specific spot on the top of the foot toward the ankle.  That was the disturbing part to me.  How something touching the top of my foot several inches away from my toe could make my toe hurt.
Over the past two weeks the discomfort has been lessening.  I’m pretty sure I cranked my laces down on a tendon or nerve and bothered it good.  Thanks for the help.

Update:  Swimming didn’t seem to do much.  Only felt anything when kicking like sprint swimming.

I spent 3 days barefoot, because what causes discomfort most consistently is putting on socks and shoes.  Went back to work (and shoes) today, same pain putting on socks and shoes.

I’ve been working on voodoo floss circles.  That still seems to help.
I’ve been getting some increased cracking in the knuckle on the big toe where the pain is located.  That really feels like a release every time, but may just be psychological.
I’m probably going to see a chiro to see if the pain is nerve related.  But my GP refuses to refer to chiros, so I’ll be biting the bullet for the cost of the visit. Oh well.

Have not seen anyone yet.  Up and down stream definitely helps.  Immediately feel the tension in my toe when setting up in couch stretch.  Voodoo across the ankle seems to help some.  A friend suggested swimming loosen the area.
