Daily Mobility Exercises by Dr. Kelly Starrett › Forums › General › Cannot Get into Couch Stretch Position
Hi All,
Just starting mobility work and I cannot get into “couch stretch” position. When I push my knee into the corner, I am unable to lift my other knee off the ground to put my foot on the ground. Any tips for modifications?
I can’t do it either. Well from the ground anyway, I find that if I get into it from standing and lowering down it’s far easier. Although not sure if that’s the correct way of doing it.
Ah, that makes a lot of sense. The motion is so hard for me otherwise. I’ll try lowering into it. Thanks!
You can scale it by doing it on the couch.
1) Place your knee in the back corner of the couch where the back cushion meets the seat cushion.
The cushions should sufficiently protect your knee cap from undue compression, but try anyway to make contact with the thigh side of your knee on the cushion.
2) Keeping your pelvis in neutral and your back straight, try and bring your other leg up onto the couch, closing the distance between your bottom and your heel.
The tendency is to let your pelvis tilt forward, thereby unloading your hip.
If you need a picture of it let me know.
Hi Kaitlin,
Thanks for the tip. I would love a picture if you have one. It is still super awkward for me to get me foot up.
Robert,
Shoot me an email [email protected] and I will send it.
