If you are injured or have had trauma to your back you should not deadlift or squat until you are cleared through your doctor and P and your injury is healed.
 With proper technique deadlifts, squats do not harm your low back.
Problems can occur when proper technique is not used when performing these lifts.
I recommend scheduling one on one sessions with a coach who has solid knowledge about the technique and experience teaching these skills.
