thinner areas like your serratus or on the shoulder blade may require softer balls or else you’ll never relax – it’ll be too painful because you’ll be pushing a hard ball onto bone through thin skin.

also i think that some newly touched areas, or sensitive areas, like for me the adductors especially near the hip, required softer balls to get me used to the pressure first, and also for releasing some of the difficult adhesions that have been there for a while first. then i could graduate up to harder tools as my knots worked themselves out.
