WHAT IS VIRTUAL MOBILITY COACH?
The Ready State Virtual Mobility Coach is like having a virtual Kelly Starrett in your pocket.
When you’re ready to face any challenge that comes your way — from sunrise to sunset — you’re in The Ready State.
As a company, The Ready State began by helping athletes improve their mobility and range of motion. At the time we called ourselves MobilityWOD — short for Mobility Workout of the Day. But our goal was always to help you be ready…
…Ready for your next race. Ready for your next workout. Ready to run around with your kids.
Ready for anything life throws your way.
Being able to move without pain or restriction is essential for being in The Ready State. But it’s only one piece of the puzzle. And we wanted to have a more complete discussion of other key topics — like sleep, downregulation, nutrition, and more. That’s why, in 2019, we evolved from MobilityWOD to become The Ready State.
Helping people with their mobility is still at the heart of what we do. And you can get daily personalized mobility drills with our Virtual Mobility Coach membership. But we also have a podcast and blog that take a wider look at what it takes to get — and stay — in The Ready State. We have big plans for the future to help everyone from athletes to executives be ready to excel on a daily basis. Be the first to hear about our newest projects by signing up for our email list.
We define “mobility” based on two components. First, you should be able to put your body into any pose or shape that is normal for a human being. In other words, you should have access to the full range of motion for the human body. But having access is not enough. The second aspect of mobility is that you need to actually be able to achieve those positions in real life. In other words, you need to have to motor control skills to actualize your complete range of motion.
To be blunt, stretching is not an effective way to restore your body’s range of motion. When you follow traditional stretching practices, all you do is passively pull on your tissues. But it turns out there is a lot more to restoring full range of motion than that.
First, stretching doesn’t get your brain involved. And remember, even if your body has full range of motion, you don’t have true “mobility” until your brain develops the motor control to actually express that range of motion. Also, unlike mobilizing, stretching does not look at your body as a system. It neglects key factors like your joints and sliding surfaces.
Mobility takes a systems approach to restoring your range of motion. It accounts for all the varied ways your body can lose its natural ability to move. Mobilizing restores your joints, sliding surfaces, soft tissue, and even blood flow. Plus it helps you develop the motor control you need to express that range of motion in your daily life.
To answer this question, we put together a complete list of our top gear recommendations.
The bottom line is that — like almost every sport or activity — working on your mobility requires equipment to be most effective. Yes, there are some mobilizations that do not require gear but the vast majority of mobilizations — well over 95% — require that you have at least a few basic items. So visit our gear list to see what you need, what’s optional, and where you can get everything.
The Ready State Virtual Mobility Coach gives you personalized daily mobility drills. You can adjust your daily programming based on how your body is feeling and your exercise schedule. Then, like a real coach, our system gives you a customized mobility routine for that day, drawing on our library of hundreds of videos.
The mobility drills in the TRS Virtual Mobility Coach fall into three main categories:
First, if you are in pain, resolving it should be your top priority. That’s why the first option in the TRS Virtual Mobility Coach says “I’m in pain.” If you select it, you’ll see a diagram of the human body, and you can click on exactly where you’re hurting. From there, you will get a mobility prescription to help fix your pain. And we’ll also help you understand the mechanisms behind your pain, so you can resolve it sooner and better.
Second, if you’re not in pain, you can tailor your mobilizations to prepare for (or recover from) a workout or sport. You start by selecting the option that says “I’m exercising” and tell us whether you want a pre- or post-workout mobilization. Then you select your activity from a list of more than four dozen sports, lifts, and other movements. From there, the TRS Virtual Mobility Coach will give you a custom mobilization for the exercise you have coming up or just completed.
Last, if you aren’t in pain, and you don’t have to prepare for or recover from exercising, you can use our daily maintenance option. You’ll be able to watch a featured mobility video of the day — similar to our current daily follow-along videos. But you’ll also be able to choose from a library of videos that are 10, 20, and 30 minutes long, depending on how much time you want to spend mobilizing. And you will be able to sort the videos by the areas of their body they target, too.

The concept of a “Supple Leopard” started when one of Kelly’s Navy SEAL friends made this passing comment. “You know, Kelly, A leopard never stretches,” he said. And for some reason, this idea stuck in Kelly’s mind — probably because it’s true…
A leopard can attack and defend at full physical capacity in the blink of an eye. You don’t see a leopard activating it’s glutes, or foam rolling, or warming up. It’s just ready.
Obviously, humans and leopards are on different physical playing fields. We have to warm up before strenuous activity to increase our core temperature. And we have to learn how to move correctly to avoid injury.
But we can still work toward the goal of having our full physical capacity available to us at a moment’s notice. And we can develop the range of motion and motor control to perform any physical feat at any time…
In other words, we can work toward Becoming A Supple Leopard.

Gyms can include mobility work before and/or after group fitness classes. Each coach will be able to choose custom, follow-along mobility workouts — developed by Dr. Kelly Starrett — and then play them for the entire class.
A VMC Gym Membership gives coaches the ability to add one-on-one mobility programming to their personal training sessions. Coaches can use Virtual Mobility Coach to deliver customized mobility training for each client.
A VMC Gym Membership drives additional profit. By making custom mobility programming a small add-on to personal training sessions and other offerings, gyms can quickly cover the monthly cost of Virtual Mobility Coach and drive additional profit.
$47 per month
A few ways. First, a gym can charge for custom mobility programming as an add-on to personal training sessions and other offers. That will directly generate profit for the gym.
On top of that, by following our mobility programming, the gym members will be able to reach more of their fitness goals, recover faster, and potentially avoid injury. And when members are successful, it leads to increased retention for the gym. Plus for personal training clients, when they see better, faster, and more pain-free results, they will continue to invest in personal training — also bringing in more money for the gym.
Virtual Mobility Coach gives them three ways to access customized mobility programming:
First, to address a painful area or mobilize a specific body part, we offer a “Pain” section. On a diagram of the human body, the area that hurts can be selected to pull up a customized program.
To offer pre- and post-workout mobility coaching, the gym staff can click the “Workout” section and choose whether they want a pre- or post-workout mobilization. From there, they can select from more than four dozen exercises and movements to pull up a fresh mobilization for that specific movement or activity each day.
We also offer a library of 10-, 20-, and 30-minute recovery videos — including a featured video of the day. These videos are tagged to indicate which body parts they focus on, too. So coaches can also pull from this library as needed.
Most gyms will already have all the equipment needed. The most important items are foam rollers, lacrosse balls, resistance bands, squat racks, and barbells.
